Spring in the 'Veld'

Last week's post was about the blossom explosion in the fruit orchards, this week will feature smaller and easier to miss wonders - the flowers of the 'veld'. Blue, purple, yellow, white, orange, and pink - they're often tiny and easy to miss, but each is a work of art in their own right.

Some have single large flowers, such as the gazania and daisies....

Wild gazanias.

Cape rain daisies and mesembryanthemum ('vygies').

I found one Chicory (Cichorium intybus Asteraceae), a beautiful flower with forking petals.

I like to call these butterfly flowers (Polygala).

 Others have many smaller flowers...

Felecia moricata.

We also went on a nature walk and picnic with the Burgers one Sunday. The veld was filled with tiny flowers hard to capture on camera. I tried anyway.

Extra points for those who notice the bee below!

Proteas.

Yellow-eyed Sorrel (Oxalis obtusa Oxalidaceae) abound.

Blue flowers are rarer, and often tiny, but nonetheless exquisite.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Jou fotos is pragtig en julle het jul eie Namakwaland op jul voorstoep! Kan nie wag om ook daar te wandel tussen die blomme en berge.

  2. Volgens Kristo Pienaar se inheemse plante boek, kan die 'little pienk-orange-red flower' 'n Oxalidaceae (suring) wees as die blaartjies klaweragtig is.
